SINGING THE BLUES

This well-traveled couple had a different kind of blues in mind when they decided to escape snowy winters in the Midwest and build a second home in southern Florida.

Their song is about the seamless blue between sea and sky…the comfortable sapphire, teal and sand-colored palette of furnishings, floors and walls…the sparkling pool where the grandkids play. Most of all for them, Florida is about creating colorful memories with family and friends.

The new home is angled to take full advantage of over 180 degrees of sweeping Gulf Coast views. Located in southwestern Florida, it comfortably accommodates their adult children, grandchildren and guests.

The designers at Katherine Elizabeth Designs oversaw every detail of the new build from layout and traffic flow to design and artwork. They paid close attention to the challenges of the bright natural light by softening windows with sheers and enlarging vistas with spectacular window treatments. Durable wide plank hand-scraped floors cater to sandy feet. Each of the en suite bedrooms has a different personality—just like their children. The grandkids’ cozy bunkroom and whimsical bath with bright sea-colored penny round tiles are especially festive.

In this well-appointed home, it would be difficult to choose a favorite room. The epicenter of the house is the expansive kitchen with its ceruse and gray weathered “L” shaped island, butler’s pantry and wet bar. The herringbone pattern of sophisticated soft gray mother-of-pearl glass tiles is repeated throughout the space. The cabinets are glazed in soft white and glass; the countertops are Cambria quartz. Meals, drinks and laughter are served up both day and night.

The dining room and great room with their magnificent water views, are two of the most comfortable gathering spots in the house. The lanai also provides a birds-eye view of the beautiful sea—a perfect place for lounging, reading, playing cards at the game table and dining outside. Equally popular is the enclosed second floor den with its stunning dark wood beam ceiling, wet bar with mosaic backsplash and panoramic views. A welcoming sectional, cocktail ottomans and game table give this lovely destination a club-like atmosphere.

Katherine Elizabeth Designs designed the master bedroom and elevator with special care. Reading chairs gather next to the bay window; the luxurious bed is flanked by reflective glass nightstands. The nautical master bath is enveloped in crème de marcle tile with his and her vanities rimmed in herringbone silk glass.

It’s said that the sea sings a different song to those who take time to listen. Surrounded by the turquoise water, cerulean sky and the lovely azure colors inside, this home is a destination of peace and inspiration for many generations and for many years to come.
